Girls in Energy step inside the world of ROVs at Film-Ocean

Students from Bucksburn Academy spent a morning at our Ellon base, meeting our team, touring the workshop and trying their hand at piloting an ROV.

On 8 October, we welcomed a group of Adura Girls in Energy students from Bucksburn Academy to Ocean House in Ellon for a morning exploring subsea technology and the careers it offers.

Dawn Banaszkiewicz, our Training and Competency Lead, and Spencer Owen, HSEQ Manager, opened the visit with an introduction to Film-Ocean, our history, global reach and the range of ROV work we carry out.

The students then heard from two of our apprentices, Olivia and Lois. Olivia joined us after studying engineering with Shell, and both talked about their day-to-day roles, how they got here and what it’s like to work in subsea and energy. Hearing it first-hand from people not long out of school themselves is a great way to show what these careers look like.

After refreshments and a chance to enjoy our roof terrace, the group headed down to the workshop. They toured the facility while ROVs, tether management systems (TMS) and launch and recovery systems (LARS) were being worked on. The highlight for many was having a go at piloting an ROV themselves.

Our CEO, Merv New, also spent time with the group, chatting about their Girls in Energy experiences. The students were curious and engaged throughout, and asked plenty of questions.

Morag Watt, Lecturer at North East Scotland College, said: “It’s visits like this that really bring careers to life.”

Lynn Reid, Head of HR at Film-Ocean, added: “It was a pleasure to be part of such an inspiring morning. Seeing the girls’ enthusiasm, curiosity and engagement was fantastic, and hopefully the experience has opened their eyes to some of the exciting career opportunities our industry has to offer.”

We hope to welcome Girls in Energy back to Film-Ocean soon.

Opening our doors to local schools is one way we show young people, and young women in particular, the range of opportunities available on their doorstep. It follows the launch of our first Apprentice Development Scheme this year, which is training the next generation of ROV pilots and technicians right here in Ellon.

Thank you to Morag and the team at North East Scotland College for bringing the group to us, to Bucksburn Academy, and to Lynn and all our colleagues who gave their time to make the morning such a good one.
