Supporting the next generation: Jordan's work experience at Film-Ocean

Film-Ocean recently welcomed Jordan Milne to Ocean House, our Ellon HQ, for a two-week work placement in our workshop, giving him hands-on exposure to the world of subsea ROV operations and maintenance.

Under the wing of Workshop Manager, Ian Stephen, Jordan’s placement covered a broad range of workshop activities across two of our ROV systems.

Jordan’s first week

During his first week, Jordan assisted with hooking up our VideoRay ROV, testing it in the workshop tank. He even had a chance to try his hand at piloting, which he picked up well.

He then shadowed Workshop Technicians, John Slatford and Graeme McLeman on the Cougar 1430 ROV system, observing the team set-up the Cougar’s Type 8 Tether Management System (TMS) for use with a single mode fibre tether. This involved spooling off the old tether, installing the new one and setting up sheave tension, giving Jordan insight into the complexities of converting and upgrading an ROV system.

The second week

In his second week, Jordan shadowed Base Technician, Martyn Beattie in preparing our Falcon ROV for an upcoming project, including interfacing a newly purchased Flexi-Clean Tooling Skid.

While much of this was observational, Martyn also ensured Jordan got proper hands-on experience. He was tasked with stripping down, cleaning and re-building a Falcon oil compensator, which was subsequently tested and passed — a great practical achievement to take away from his time at Film-Ocean.

Beyond the technical exposure, Jordan’s work experience offered a valuable opportunity for some of Film-Ocean’s more junior technicians to step into a mentoring role themselves. This was a small but valuable shift in perspective for everyone involved.

Workshop Manager, Ian Stephen commented:

“It’s brilliant to have someone like Jordan come through the workshop. He was keen from day one, asked good questions and wasn’t afraid to get involved wherever we could bring him in.

Placements like this matter to us. It’s how we bring new people into the ROV industry and give them a real sense of what a career in subsea engineering actually looks like.

It was also great to see some of our younger technicians step up and mentor Jordan themselves — a good reminder that everyone in the workshop, no matter their experience level, has something valuable to pass on."

Jordan added:

During my time with Film-Ocean, I learned many valuable skills and gained a better understanding of the workplace, which has been very beneficial. I really appreciate the time and support from everyone and enjoyed the experience. Thank you again for this opportunity and for making me feel welcome.”
