The Percy Pigs are five 10 and 11-year-olds from the small Aberdeenshire village of Strichen. They are a self-funded school club, with a group of exceptionally driven young people, their coaches, and a community that got behind them. Earlier this year, that combination was enough to see them crowned UK National Champions in VEX IQ Robotics, earning them a prestigious invitation to compete on the world stage in St. Louis.

As an Aberdeenshire-based company that deploys specialist ROV technology for the offshore energy industry, the connection felt natural. Our work depends on people who are curious, technically-minded, and willing to tackle complex problems in challenging environments. When we heard about a group of kids from our own corner of Scotland doing exactly that — with robots, no less — supporting them was an easy decision.
Backing local STEM talent isn't just good for the community, it's good for our industry. The engineers, technicians, and ROV pilots of tomorrow are in classrooms right now, and initiatives like this matter.
The Percy Pigs travelled to St. Louis, competed against teams from around the world, and achieved their highest ever competition score. They didn't bring home the world title, but they represented Aberdeenshire and Scotland with tremendous ability and composure, and that's no small feat.
The robotics club continues at Strichen School into the new academic year, with the team already preparing for the next round of VEX IQ challenges. A fundraiser is planned for June to help sustain the club, and remaining funds from their crowdfunding campaign will go towards new equipment and competition entry fees. We look forward to watching their progress. You can find out more about the club's efforts via their Facebook page.
Well done to the whole team. We're proud to have played a small part in your adventure.
